Why do the best roses in the world come from Ecuador?

The key factor is the favorable growing conditions in the Andean highlands, which in Ecuador are characterized by the powerful equatorial sun on a narrow strip. Warm days alternate with cool nights throughout the year. The seasonal climatic variations are small. At the same time, cultivation altitudes of 2800 - 3300 m above sea level are considerable. The intense solar radiation at the equator has a particularly favorable effect on the luminosity of the colors.

Because rose plants originally come from northern Europe and northern Asia, i.e. from climatic zones with considerable seasonal changes in vegetation conditions, the rose plants in the highlands of Ecuador "experience" a kind of "eternal spring". By crossing, special cultivars have been refined over a long time, so that the plants are not exhausted by the continuous flowering - nutrition, protection and care provided.

Just in the last decades, considerable progress has been made in the development of varieties, so that today roses are available with flower sizes that seemed unthinkable years ago. The variety of colors today is almost unmanageable.

The difference between day and night temperature is crucial for the development of large flowers. Ideal is about 25 ° C during the day and 7 ° C at night. The smaller the difference, the smaller the flowers, the greater the risk of flower defects.

The roses are grown in high foil houses. Greenhouses with heating and lighting, as is common in northern Europe, are not needed in Ecuador. Therefore, the production there without high energy use is possible and therefore much more sustainable.

The operating sizes of the rose farms are small compared to other countries (Colombia, Kenya, Ethiopia). Accordingly, the quality standard of the farms - often family businesses - is very high.

Ecuador roses are known for their long shelf life in addition to the large flowers. Some varieties have therefore brought it to high profile and popularity, such as the variety Esperance.

INFINITY

For many years INFINITY has been our product line for preserved roses / everlasting roses and other durable flowers.

Roses, real AND durable

At Blütenpracht, we use the term "Infinity Rose" to describe preserved REAL roses. In addition, we offer other "Infinity" products, such as hydrangeas and various types of cut foliage.

There is a lot to do: Replacing artificial flowers with arrangements of Inifinity roses is on the cards!

The process

Infinity products are made from real flowers in a gentle process. Selected quality roses are cut at the perfect opening stage early in the morning. Using a patented process, the blossoms are bleached in an alcoholic solution. Then the cell liquid is replaced with a glycerine-based preservative in which food-safe color pigments are dissolved. The cell structure is fully preserved. In this way, all the beauty of the flowers is naturally preserved.

Responsibility for people and the environment

The production involves a lot of manual labor. The producer observes the highest standards in environmental and labor protection. With programs for single mothers and deaf-mute employees, he faces social responsibility for society.

Processing and storage

The flowers can be processed in many ways. If necessary, the blossoms can be cleaned with a draft or a soft brush. Humidity as well as direct sunlight should be avoided. With proper treatment, the flowers will remain "fresh" for many years as on the first day.

A key consideration in assessing the environmental footprint of cut flowers is the energy consumed during cultivation and transportation.

Since the early 1980s, an ever-increasing proportion of the flowers sold in our markets have come from overseas. In the 'sunny countries' there, very little energy needs to be expended for the actual cultivation as well as the construction and maintenance of the company's internal infrastructure. In contrast, the solid glass greenhouses in Northern Europe, with their heating and lighting systems, consume vast amounts of energy. According to conventional wisdom, the eco-balance of flower cultivation in the countries of the equatorial highlands is still many times more favorable even when they arrive in Europe as return freight by air.

Although many billions of dollars worth of flowers have taken this route for nearly four decades, there is little reliable information on the CO2 footprint of flowers. A single scientific study was published in 2007, more than a decade ago. This study, from England's Cranfield University, concluded that imported flowers use up to six times less fossil energy than Dutch greenhouse produce (*1).

To the advantage of overseas roses, the following conditions have changed since then:

(1) Most farms are now equipped with computerized irrigation systems that can be used to deliver fertilizer to the plants with virtually no loss. This neutralizes a factor that ten years ago was still to the disadvantage of overseas production.

(2) The means of transport have become faster and better, so that considerable quantities reach us in climate-controlled sea containers.

(3) Innovations in modern aircraft have reduced the amount of fuel used.


To the advantage of greenhouse flowers, conditions have since changed as follows:

(1) Nowadays, the lighting is by LED light source and is used more effectively.

(2) Renewable sources in the energy mix have increased slightly.

The rumor persists that recent studies on the life cycle assessment of cut flowers are available from Dutch universities, but they are not published because they are harmful to the interests of gardeners there.
In the sense of a real transparency about this connection, new, independent and methodically verifiable studies are necessary.
